Jersey City program seeks to keep kids healthy and fed this summer
Former New York Yankee player Pat Kelly and Jersey City schools Superintendent Marcia Lyles were all in attendance at Lincoln Park on Friday as Jersey City announced its participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Free Summer Meals initiative this summer. At the event, held on Lincoln Park's Turf 1 field, children learned about the importance of eating nutritious meals in the summer once school is out and raised awareness for the USDA-run Free Summer Meals program that Jersey City wil..

  • Should property taxes support the arts?

Should property taxes support the arts?
Should the city dedicate a portion of local property taxes to support local arts? This is the question facing the City Council as arts activists showed up en masse on Wednesday to lobby the city for a share of Gold Coast development revenue. Wearing red t-shirts bearing a percentage sign as their logo, Christine Goodman, former director of Art House Productions, led an army of artists into City Hall in what amounted to a pro-arts rally, seeking to get their piece of the economic pie. Government..

Rain doesn't stop members of Trinity Lutheran Church from ...
The rain did not stop Trinity Lutheran Church members in Jersey City from holding a street fair in celebration of Juneteenth on Saturday. Juneteenth, which was first celebrated on June 19, 1865, was the day in which Union soldiers in the American Civil War arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that slaves were now free, despite the Emancipation Proclamation having been passed two and a half years earlier. Members of Trinity Lutheran Church set up tents outside a..

Meet NJ's own lovable losers: St. Peter's baseball
JERSEY CITY -- On this cloudy June day, as St. Peter's head coach Danny Ramirez makes his way across the infield, he carefully steps around goose droppings. Apparently, even the birds are leaving commentary on the quality of the baseball that has been played on the diamond overlooking the Pulaski Skyway in Jersey City. St. Peter's has just completed one of the most painful seasons in Div. 1 history - an 0-38 performance that gnawed at Ramirez and his players with each blowout loss that they wer..

Follow protocol with 'chase' cops (I was) picking up the paper today and reading about the two transfers and four suspensions of the "chase cops," involved in the June 4 incident. My question to Mayor Fulop is, did he think this through, and follow guidelines, or just make a rush to judgement? Heaven forbid Jersey City be left out of the trial by media show that controls the information and enforces the opinion of contempt for the police. Incidentally, in all the years of reading the Jersey Jou..
